Contemporary Muslim Literature

This seminar explores the literary production of Muslims in diaspora, covering a variety of genres such as novels, poetry, plays, graphic novels, memoir, and journalistic writing. The course will begin by familiarizing students with the basic structures of Islamic religious traditions but will largely focus on the lived experience of Muslims in Anglophone contexts. The course will examine Muslim experiences of immigration, configurations of gender identities, the headscarf/niqab debates, representations of belonging and alienation. Throughout the terms, the course seeks to interrogate and dissect popular stereotypes of Muslims to consider why Muslims remain in the headlines 25 years after 9/11. 

This course is repeatable for credit under different topic titles.

With repeatable courses, the course number (e.g., ENGL 466) is repeatable, but the topic is not. You can take as many topics as you like under the same course number, but you can only take each individual topic once.
