When the word 鈥渂oredom鈥� arose (~1850s), it referred to a 鈥渟piritual crisis鈥� of meaning. Today, our concept of boredom is usually much more trivial. But what if we took boredom seriously? My idea is this: There are forms of boredom characteristic of life today that don鈥檛 just belong to any of us individually; they are part of a cultural mood marked by an overload of choices and information. Making sense of this situation can help us experience more meaning amidst the overload.
