Teaching Development Workshop Series: Tons of Tutorials Tips

    When:
    Friday, February 3, 2017
    10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
    Where:
    Ellis Hall
    Room: 319
    Find on Campus Map
    Description:

In this workshop for first-time TAs, we will try out a number of teaching techniques in order to experiment with an ice-breaker game, brainstorming, the chalkboard, participation, and small group activities. For example, after working through an ice-breaker exercise, we will brainstorm the value of such activities, which in turn will open up a discussion about the benefits of brainstorming. We will generate teaching ideas in small groups, respond to the workshop in a one-minute paper, and discuss handouts and overheads. The workshop will focus on the following areas:

    • The first tutorial: ice-breakers and creating a positive atmosphere
    • Encouraging student participation
    • Alternatives to lecturing
