Rosh Hashanah: New Year's Day, year 5779, and anniversary of the creation of the world. The first of the Ten Days of Awe (or Repentance).
The First of Mu岣rram (first month of the Islamic year 1440 AH) celebrates the 岣jra (migration) of Mu岣mmad and his followers in 622 CE, from Mecca to Medina, where they established the first Islamic community. (Observance begins at sunset of the previous day, but special worship and prayers begin September 11.)
