Supporting International Students in the Classroom

    When:
    Tuesday, October 23, 2018
    1:30 PM – 3:30 PM
    Where:
    Joseph S. Stauffer Library
    Room: Speaker's Corner
    Find on Campus Map
    Description:

Like many Canadian universities, Queen’s University is recruiting increasing numbers of international undergraduate and graduate students. What impact does this have on teaching and learning in the classroom and beyond? This session will allow you to develop answers to that question in multiple ways. An opening panel of faculty, staff, and students will share broad ideas on supporting international students in the classroom. Then, you’ll choose from a variety of ‘lightning consultations’ on topics in international student pedagogy, such as writing assignments, group work, reading strategies, microaggressions and racism, academic integrity, and more. Each lightning consultant will give a 5-minute overview of a topic, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A within the small group. There will be time for you to participate in three different lightning consultations. At the end of this workshop, you’ll have a clear idea of the range of issues around international students in the classroom, and a clear sense of purpose of how to adapt your teaching accordingly.
