In Copland’s An Outdoor Overture for Band the audience will discover some of his finest and most personal music where driving march-like theme alternates with reflective melodic sections. Inspired by an original piece written for piano by Haydn, Dello Joio transformed this simple music through extensive variations in the three movements giving birth to his Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn. At the end of the poignant work Polytechnique by Canadian composer Jonathan Dagenais, the 14 chime strikes are in memory of the 14 victims who, on December 6th, 1989, were shot in a tragic event at Université de Montréal.
