Exploring the Attitudes of Pre-service Secondary Science Teachers Towards Implementing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Science Education

    by: Ethan Hodges, M.Ed

This qualitative research project explores the attitudes of seven pre-service secondary science teachers (PSSTs) towards implementing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in secondary science classes. This research asks two questions related to PSSTs attitudes towards EDI, and how PSSTs conceptualize EDI in the context of science classes. The research uses culturally responsive and relevant pedagogy (CRRP) as a framework to address the research questions because of its direct relation to the science curriculum.

The findings of this work show participants speaking to their awareness of EDI, conceptualizations of EDI, and identifies perceived barriers to implementing EDI in science education. These findings point to specific gaps in teacher education that participants bring to light, and suggest a direction that further research can take to address these gaps. To understand, support, and engage with ED is imperative to promote equitable education experiences for all student in Ontario.
