Soul Healing: Practicing Medicine in Rural Northern Communities and Building Understanding within Care Providers
1)Speaker's introduction. Working on the North Shore of Quebec, in Cree country (James Bay-Eeyou Istchee), and among the Inuit of Nunavik for 47 years. Teaching literature and medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at Laval University for 23 years.
2)Care in the northern regions of Quebec, still today, is based on the notion of teamwork (doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, dentists, pharmacists, midwives, all under one roof).
3)The importance of "soul-to-soul" contact to truly heal, both the soma and the psyche.
4)How the arts (and literature) can contribute to the quality of the caregiver-patient relationship. The difference between empathy and compassion.
5)Humor: a major weapon to maintain joy, even in the face of serious illness.
