Congratulations to Rhea Ashley Hoskin who has won one of the two Queen’s University Governor General’s Academic Gold Medals for 2018-2019. This medal is awarded to a graduating or completed Master’s or Doctoral student in the School of Graduate Studies, chosen in competition with other nominated graduate students from across the University. It is awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement.

Congratulations to PhD Alumni, Jennifer Matsunaga, who has made the 2019 CBC Nonfiction Prize longlist for Pictures in the "sad chapters" of Canadian history.

Sociology PhD Alumni, Midori Ogasawara, published a new book entitled Snowden Japan File: How Japan has been involved with America's Global Surveillance Systems on September 7th in Japan. She also launched a book tour in Japan in August and gave five public talks in the cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, Fukuoka and Nagasaki.

The Department of Sociology celebrated 50 years on September 21, 2019 at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre! Thank you to all alumni, former faculty, staff and friends as well as current faculty, staff and students who attended.

Our recent PhD graduate, Derya Gungor had a grad chat interview which aired on Grad Chat, CFRC on September 24. Derya discussed how she produced her PhD thesis, and its implications in Turkey and for women in Canada and the US.

Dr. Norma Möllers will be presenting her research at the on September 5 and will be at The Word on the Street Toronto Festival on September 21, for a panel discussion on technology and justice convened by Toronto Public Library as part of their series .

On October 2 David Lyon gave a public lecture, “Waking up to Smart Surveillance” at the Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland, as one of the events associated with the 656th annual inauguration of the new academic year. The university was founded in 1364. Nicholas Copernicus was once a student there.

Dr. Victoria Sytsma is the co-principal investigator on a research team which has secured a grant in the amount of $110,346.69USD from The Charles Koch Foundation, Criminal Justice & Policing Reform Program to complete a study titled, Identifying Situational Determinants of Police Use of Force: A Systematic Social Observation of Body Camera Footage in Newark, NJ
